Vazhakkai-Pepper Fry | RawBanana Fry

Vazhakkai-Pepper Fry | RawBanana Fry

Yippee I finally got some nice and soft raw bananas in US!!!  You must be wondering why I have started the post with this joy. Yes, it is very rare to see a good, nice and soft vazhakkai in our Indian stores. Fortunately or unfortunately I found a good vazhakkai recently. So I bought home.

When we were in Chennai we used to get vazhakkai from periamma from her village.  She used to give fresh vazhakkai from her field which is really very soft. I love it when amma makes vazhkkai fry or poriyal or podimas. As soon as I bought, I called up amma for the recipe. And here it is…..

Preparation time: 2-3 minutes
Cooking time : 10-15 minutes

Ingredients

1-2 raw banana/vazhakkai
2 onions
1 tomato
1 tsp chilli powder
2 tsp coriander powder/dhaniya powder
1/2tsp turmeric powder
1tsp peppercorns
1tsp fennel seeds/sombhu
1tsp mustard seeds
Curry leaves (optional)
Salt
Oil

How I made It

  • Peel the outer skin of raw banana. Chop it into small cubes. Keep immersed in water with turmeric powder and salt
  • In a kadai heat oil and splutter mustard seeds follow by curry leaves. Add the finely chopped onions and cook till it turns transparent. Add chopped tomatoes, cook till it goes gooey. Now add the cut raw bananas

  • Add chillipowder and dhaniya powder, mix it well. Add some water and check for salt. Cook on low flame till it becomes dry.
  • Coarsely grind the peppercorns and fennel seeds. Add the coarse powder with the raw banana. Roast it on high flame
Serve hot with rice and any kuzhambhu of ur choice.
