Zucchini Chutney | Side dish for Idli, Dosa

Its spring time here in US and I just love the climate. The sun shines throughout the day and this is the best time for all outdoor activities. I find lots and lots of spring vegetables in the market. I had already tried few spring veggies in our tamil dishes. Check my Asparagus Chutney here. One veggie which attracted me this time is Zucchini. This a late spring and early summer veggie, but I found few in my market in cheaper rates now. So I grabbed one and tried to make chutney with that.

Pudhina Chutney | Mint Chutney | Side-dish for Idli & Dosa

Though the recipe is very simple I wanted to share in my blog… this chutney has an exotic flavor of mint which I loved the most. If ur a mint lover, you would definitely nod ur head… am I right? This can be served with idlis and even with dosa. I like the same version of chutney with no coconut… it is the best combo with sambar and rice, like a thogayal/thuvayal. Try the same recipe without the coconut and serve for rice too. Since I like the flavor of green chillies more than the red ones I have used that in the recipe. It is optional and you can choose ur own variety of chillies. Serve with hot Idli. Yummm :)

Raw Mango Pickle | Cut Mango Pickle | Instant Mango Pickle

Raw Mango Pickle / Cut Mango Pickle are the easiest pickle recipe which can be made in a minute. This can be done instantly when u have just raw mangoes at home. Just chop the mangoes and temper!!! That’s it; the pickle is ready to serve for a grand meal. How could our Indian meal get completed without a pickle?

I always have different varieties of pickle at home to accompany our lunch menu. Sometimes it goes either for parathas or with dosas too. Tomato thokku are the best one which I make. It can be served as a pickle or chutney. And the other pickle I mostly prepare is chilli-garlic pickle which suits best for all parathas. Click on the link to get the recipe. This pickle joins the hand when I found raw mangoes in the nearby shop. Check out my other recipe with raw mangoes.

Ridge gourd Chutney | Peerkangai Chutney | Peerkangai Thogayal

You will never know to which u ll become addictive. I never used to taste this peerkangai in my life and don’t tried this before even. But when my mom told she made chutney using the outer skin of ridge gourd, I gave a thought of trying it at my home. I asked for the recipe from her and replicated it in my kitchen. Here in US it is very tough to get Indian vegetables at the local market. So I need to travel thirty miles to get the veggies. Once I went to the Indian market I purposefully got one and tried the next day. I just loved it when I had with the simple sambar. It will be a taste savior when had at the times of nausea.

Chilli-Garlic Pickle Recipe

This is my first pickle recipe which I learnt from one of my friend in a surprise outing.  The simplicity of the recipe made me to try as soon as I reach home and more importantly TH loved it.

Both of us were not a great fan of pickles. I always use store bought pickle mostly with a garlic flavor and use that for almost a year… but as soon as I make this chilli-garlic pickle, TH started using it as a side dish for almost all the dishes… let me know ur reviews about this pickle and  here comes the recipe…

Asparagus Chutney Recipe

Asparagus, this word is very new to me a year back. Now I became a fan of this veggie. Once I tried grilled asparagus in an American restaurant, it was awesome. I wanted to incorporate asparagus in my day-to-day recipe. One of my friend suggested me about making chutney with asparagus. So I simply added asparagus with our own style of chutney. Trust me it was a grand success. TH loved it and I made it again in the same week.

I usually have a habit of analyzing about all the veggies before I buy. When I searched for asparagus it went on and on. It has folic acid, anti-aging, reduces the risk for cancer and heart diseases. So why wait!!! Try ur version of this chutney and lemme know the response.

I served semolina biryani along with this chutney. You can also serve this as a thogayal for curd rice.

Onion-Tomato Chutney Recipe

Onion-Tomato Chutney Recipe

This chutney is my one of the quick-fix side-dish for idlis/dosa. TH loves it with dosa topped with some oil. I prefer to avoid coconuts in my food. To my personal opinion i feel it will increase the cholesterol level. This chutney doesn't need coconut. So if u wants to avoid coconut in ur food (just like me) this chutney is the best choice. And also it doesn't require much time. You can make it while steaming the idlis. Since we are grinding everything together there is no need to chop onion and tomatoes finely. If u likes the mint and coriander flavor, try adding it. I love the mint version of this chutney.

Red Coconut Chutney

This chutney is TH’s favorite one. I always used to prepare it when I was in Chennai. Its goes great with dosas as well as idlis. My mom makes coconut chutney with green chillies and also with red chillies. Sambhar along with this chutney for hot, super soft idlis makes a perfect combination for weekend breakfast. I made it with grated frozen coconut since I don’t get fresh and good coconut here.

TH adds sesame oil on top of it along with idli-milagai podi for dosa. I don’t have any idea how it taste. But he loves it. Since we are giving a quick fry it can be stored for 1-2 days.

Capsicum-Mint Chutney

Capsicum-Mint Chutney

For most of the South-Indian recipes chutneys will be the major side dish. We always used to have coconut, ginger, coriander and mint chutneys. This will be kinda boring …. Isn’t it??? To make it much interesting I have used capsicum in chutneys and it came out really well.

As we all know capsicums are very rich in calcium and iron. So in this way we can make a healthy yet delicious side dish.

TOMATO THOKKU

TOMATO THOKKU

My Very first dish I got appreciation from everyone. TH will go crazy whenever I make this and he finishes off it completely without even a trace J
Ofcourse the source is from amma. She used to make this for each and every trip and we never complained for dat. I even used to take this along with rice for lunch.

This thokku will suit to anything as such like a pickle for curd rice and can mix with rice as for Instant thakkali sadham and also as a side dish for idlis, chapathis and all that. This can be even stored for a week or so.  Store this in a dry and clean air-tight container.
